Our History

The Institute for Global Commerce and Industry was founded in 2016 to address the growing need for rigorous, independent research on international trade and industrial development. Recognizing the increasing interconnectedness of the global economy, the Institute was established by leading scholars and policymakers to provide objective, data-driven insights for informed decision-making.

Initially focusing on areas such as the impact of emerging technologies on global value chains, the Institute quickly became a valuable resource for understanding global economic complexities. Over the years, the Institute has expanded its research scope and actively engaged with policymakers and industry leaders through various platforms.

Committed to its founding principles of independence and collaboration, the Institute strives to produce impactful research that contributes to a more prosperous and equitable global future.

Leadership

IGCI is guided by a dedicated leadership team with extensive experience and expertise in international trade, economics, and policy. Their vision and strategic direction are instrumental in shaping the Institute's research agenda and fostering its impact on the global stage.

Dr. Anya Sharma, Executive Director:

  • Educational Background: Ph.D. in Economics, Stanford University; M.A. in International Relations, Johns Hopkins University; B.A. in Economics, Yale University.

  • Career Highlights: Dr. Sharma brings over 20 years of experience in international economic policy and research. Prior to joining the Institute, she served as a Senior Policy Advisor at the Office of the United States Trade Representative, where she played a key role in the development of multilateral trade agreements. She has also held faculty positions at the University of California, Berkeley, and her research on global trade imbalances has been widely published in leading academic journals.

Dr. Kenji Tanaka, Director of Research:

  • Educational Background: Ph.D. in International Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; M.Sc. in Economics for Development, University of Oxford; B.Sc. in Economics, University of Tokyo.

  • Career Highlights: Dr. Tanaka is a renowned expert in international trade theory and applied econometrics. Before joining, he was the Head of the Global Trade Analysis Unit at a prominent international economic think tank, where he led significant research projects on the impact of trade liberalization on developing economies. He is also a frequent advisor to international organizations such as the World Bank and the World Trade Organization.

Ms. Isabella Rossi, Director of Programs and Engagement:

  • Educational Background: M.A. in International Affairs, Columbia University; B.A. in Political Science and Economics, Georgetown University.

  • Career Highlights: Ms. Rossi has a strong background in developing and managing international research collaborations and outreach initiatives. Prior to joining, she served as the Director of International Programs at a leading policy research organization, where she successfully established partnerships with research institutions and government agencies across the globe. Her expertise lies in facilitating knowledge exchange and fostering impactful engagement with diverse stakeholders.
